PostSubject: How to make a picture transperant on Gimp 2.6   Sun Feb 13, 2011 2:04 am

Step 1:: Open Gimp, and open the image you want to make transparent

Step 2::Go to the top of Gimp and click on the layer button

Step3:: Click on Transparency and then Add Alpha Channel

Step 4:: Go to the right side (or wherever your layers, channels, paths, and undo toolbar are and there you can view the layers or whatever.

If you can't find this go to:: Windows>Recently Closed Docks> layers, channels, paths, and undo-Gradient...

To cut out the areas you want to make transparent you could use the free select tool or the fuzzy select.

Here's when you use fuzzy select(I had to use a different image to make it more clear.) ::

Here's what you end up with(I kept the outline to show you what i did.)

This is what you need to to do to cut the outline out with free select (I drew thw arrow to show you, you need to connect that.)

this what you get when you use free select::(not the best example.)

Hope my guide helps Very Happy Feel free to ask any questions

good guide, but just one question that i don't see here is how does it remove the actual background or does it do it on it's own?. usually when you're aiming to make a picture transparent, your removing a particular object out of the picture and making it transparent, EX:

The picture on the left has a green BG that i want to remove to make the image transparent; the picture on the right shows a dotted line wrapped around the object that i want to keep and remove the rest so that it will look like the image below:

now that the BG is taken out, i can leave it transparent like this so that it can blend into any background chosen or i can make a new avie or signature with it.

remember when making a guide to give full step by step instructions so that members can follow along clearly without posting alot of questions =0). Once the guide is more clearly detailed, i will approve it to be joined with the other guides. Thanks

Great guide!
But it would been better if you showed a picture to see how it turned out.
